Princess and the Pauper, The

Published 1939

Nicky Nome, a spinoff from "A Coach for Cinderella" and hero of this cartoon, rescues a treasure-laden pauper from the Valley of Jewels, taking him to the princess on a magic carpet, which transforms itself into a new Chevrolet. Expresses a caricatured view of Arab people, typical of many cartoons of the time.

"NICKY NOME SAVES DAY BY RESCUE OF THE PAUPER, LADEN WITH TREASURE, ON THE WAY BACK TO THE PRINCESS FROM THE VALLEY OF JEWELS, USING THE MAGIC CARPET, WHICH IS TRANSFORMED INTO A NEW AUTOMOBILE."

Ken Smith sez: Another in the stunning "Nicky Nome" series of Technicolor Chevrolet cartoons (see A Coach For Cinderella). In this one, a doltish king promises the hand of his lovely daughter to the wealthiest man in the land. Nobody is richer than sleazy "Ali Kazam," but a more deserving "pauper boy" gets the girl when Nicky whisks him away to the Valley of Jewels on a magic carpet that turns into a you-know-what. Beautifully animated and scored; incredibly rich colors.

Subject: Enjoyable!!
I found this cartoon very enjoyable. It's a bit racist, but is still less racist than most current talk shows. If you can ignore the racism, you will probobly enjoy this cartoon.

Subject: Zingo! There's the jewels!
How can a boy with no jewels compete for the princess against a villian with crystal balls? With a little magic and a Chevrolet, of course! A Hummer prototype morphs into a moderne Chevrolet motorcar, the car for a man who needs to compensate.

Subject: Animated Stereotypes?? Gee what a surpise!
In the same vein as "A Coach for Cinderella', and using the same animation, this is a very beautifully animated piece about a boy trying to win a fair maiden's hand. What is stunning about this piece though, is the racist stereotypes here. What's so funny about these arab stereotypes is the ACCENTS, which sound NOTHING like arab. At least they got the wide lipped black yassuh stereotype voice right..
